What is a Permanent Resident Card?

A Permanent Resident Card is a wallet-sized plastic card required for all Canadian permanent residents wishing to re-enter Canada through a commercial carrier.

Those who need to apply for a Permanent Resident Card fall under three categories:

• Applying for a first Permanent Resident Card;
  
• Replacing a lost, stolen, or expired Permanent Resident Card;
• Requiring urgent processing of Permanent Resident Card application.

You need a valid permanent resident (PR) card to return to Canada by plane, train, bus or boat. If you know your card will expire when you’re traveling, renew it before you leave. You can only renew your card in Canada.
